5 Common Mistakes Filmmakers Make with Film Festivals

5 Festival Circuit Mistakes That Could Be Costing You Momentum (and What to Do Instead)

The festival circuit isn’t just about great films – it’s about smart strategy. And yet, I see talented filmmakers sabotage their own success with avoidable missteps.

Here are five of the most common mistakes I see – and what to do instead if you want real traction, not just participation.

Mistake #1: Submitting Without a Strategy
Throwing your film at every festival with an open application isn’t strategy – it’s wishful thinking. Without a clear submission plan based on category fit, premiere status, and timing, you’re burning money and momentum.

👉 Instead: Build a tiered roadmap aligned with your goals, genre, and available assets. Festivals aren’t lottery tickets; they’re levers – if you know how to pull them.

Mistake #2: Skimming the Surface on Research
Not all festivals are created equal. Choosing based on name recognition or FilmFreeway ranking alone can lead to dead ends and wasted entries.

👉 Instead: Prioritize programmer patterns, audience makeup, alumni outcomes, and sponsorships. Real research reveals how your film will land, not just where it might play.

Mistake #3: Showing Up Without Building Inroads
Festivals are relationship machines. If you’re not connecting with programmers, peers, and press before and after the event, you’re missing half the game.

👉 Instead: Focus on intentional networking. DM reviewers. Book coffees. Prep questions that open doors. Visibility is earned – and amplified – through people.

Mistake #4: Forgetting You’re the Publicist Too
Your film might be brilliant – but if no one hears about it, it doesn’t move the needle. Many filmmakers leave promotion to chance, expecting buzz to materialize on its own.

👉 Instead: Treat marketing as mission-critical. Plan for social drops, press quotes, trailer timing, and post-screening assets. Programmers remember filmmakers who know how to amplify.

Mistake #5: Missing the Professional Moment
From late replies to awkward emails, unintentional etiquette missteps can damage relationships before they start.

👉 Instead: Learn how to navigate with emotional intelligence and clarity. Festivals are professional spaces. Treat every interaction – on Zoom, in DMs, on-site – as part of your brand footprint.

If you’re nodding along thinking, “I’ve made at least one of these,” you’re not alone – and you’re not too late.
